I drove a prius. It was just for an hour or so on the highway then about 5 hours of riding in the passenger seat. Let's just say if it never happens again you won't hear me complaining or reliving the time I drove a prius. Oh and to top it all off my uncle, the one whos prius it is drives 60 in 65s which is mildly infuriating. I also drove a volvo 940, turbo version. All highway. Wasn't bad but nothing terribly exciting. Had to drive it like a grandpa though as my grandpa was in the car as were 2 cats and a dog.

It's an unremarkable car with a quite remarkable drivetrain that enthusiasts hate for some reason. Also, obligatory use of the word "smug" has just happened just to get that out of the way.

I'd love to rent one and take it to an autocross just so I can feel what a car, that put driver involvement as it's absolute lowest priority, acts like at the limit.

Driving that to it's limit would be… interesting depending on the track

Because car enthusiasts are assholes.

The gadgets were fun. The seats were shit, which was surprising. I don't even remember what rear visibility is. I did try to let the smugness get me though. "oh you are going to blow by me at 70? I'm getting 50mpg, suck it" Then it hit me that I wanted to be cruising along at 70

I'm going to go with lots of understeer.

I feel your pain. I just had to drive one of these through Berlin.

It's like I don't even know who you are anymore....go away!

I got to commute in one for a week. A '10. It was my sister in law's car and they left it with me for a week while they were on vacation. I thought it would be fun to try out, play around. Although it was interesting to see what kind of MPG I could get for the first two days, the graphing was sort of nifty, but for the last 3 days I found myself basically bored to tears. The driving it self was efficient, but completely uninteresting.
A few weeks later took a Volt for a test drive at a dealership. Night and day difference. I bought one.

I didn't even mean it as blind Prius bashing either, I'm genuinely curious about how it acts when driven hard. Does it start to give the driver some feedback, or is it totally numb all the way until it understeers into a divider?
Hmm, I may have to see if any agencies around here rent Priuses. You know, for science and stuff...

Agreed, I'm thinking it'd plow like a damn mule and roll like a dingy in rough seas.

You'd think that the Prius, which is more or less intended to be the ultimate commuter car, would have comfy comfy seats. It has what feels like cheap lawn furniture.

Rear visibility is a low point of the car, but I thought the seats were pretty decent, at least compared to the ones in my Impreza.

I dunno about rolling too much it has a pretty low center of gravity doesn't it?
![]() 09/04/2013 at 15:50 |

Probably, but I'm pretty sure the one I rode in had jello for shocks and springs that I could probably compress by hand, so physics would do the rest. It's not likely to roll over or anything, but the body roll would be.....interesting.

I've seen a Prius c on an autocross course on Youtube before.

I haven't been in a volt but the prius is just painfully boring.

I actually prefer the ones in my wrx. the ones in the prius were just hard and flat. I don't really expect bolsters to hold you in for massive G force but there was almost no give. I thought it would be like a sofa in the living room but no, not at all

That's it! Cheap lawn furniture. Not even a camping chair, just cheap plastic hell.

Center of gravity is probably low due to the batteries but it weighs a bunch because of those and it felt like I was driving a mini van. I was reaching down at the steering wheel and not forward which felt weird

low roll resistance ftw

It probably would not like changing direction at high speeds.

It's ok, I had to drive one all summer :/ Long story short, had a really long commute and my grandma gave me her 2002 with 40k on the clock to commute in. I hated it, but it saved me a bunch of money. But now I'm selling it for her and am getting a nice little selling bonus, so it's all good in the end.

Whaaaat? Pandas are really decent small cars. Definitely less boring than a Micra or a Yaris!

a few people from my team took a dodge minivan to san francisco on a business trip earlier last year. hung over on the drive back, we stopped mid-way and my boss made me drive back. surprisingly solid motor, but god awful automatic transmission that spent half the time switching between all of the gears. needless to say, I got the "slow down, Jason - this isn't your 911" warning from my boss despite us being much safer slowing down and accelerating through the corners with it than everyone else's death grab steering wheel yank at freeway speeds.
